OUTCOMES TRAINING FOR VOLUNTARY AND COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS

How much do you know about the effects of your organisations work?
Would you like to know more about outcomes?
Are your funders asking about outcomes monitoring?

Understanding and using an outcomes focus is a free two day training course for voluntary and community organisations. The course aims to equip participants to introduce an outcomes focus within their own organisation. For this reason organisations are encouraged to send two or three people from their organisation on the course, whether trustees, paid staff, volunteers or a mixture.

By the end of the training participants will:

Have a clear understanding of what an outcome is and what it is not
Be better able to identify outcomes relevant to their work
Be aware of the main benefits of focusing on outcomes
Know more about how to monitor outcomes
Know more about effective ways to introduce an outcomes approach in their own organisation and have made a start on it.

Course 1: 23rd January and 27th February 2008 (9.30-4.30) at The Green Room, Christchurch, Riddings Road, Ilkley LS29 9LU

Course 2: 12th March and 17th April 2008 (9.30 –4.30) at Bradford CVS, 19-25 Sunbridge St. Bradford

Christmas Parcels - packed , wrapped and dispatched.

Local volunteers packed and wrapped 80 Christmas Parcels at the Ilkley Good Neighbours offices on Thursday morning 13th December 2007. These gifts were distributed to isolated older people in the Ilkley District in time for Christmas. The main purpose of the parcel is to brighten the lives of those who otherwise may be forgotten at Christmas. Volunteers from the Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale and Ilkley Council for Voluntary Service will make contact with each recipient as they drop off the parcel.

Each parcel is not only packed with festive food and essentials, but also with information about local services, such as the Community Transport car lift scheme and Good Companions Befriending Scheme.

This year the Ilkley Good Neighbours gift was sponsored by Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale, Ilkley Rotary Club, Ilkley Moor Lions Club, Ilkley and District Round table, and Ilkley & District CVS and Good Neighbours.

ILKLEY CVS AGM

Christchurch

17 October 2007

The Annual General Meeting of Ilkley and District Council for Voluntary Service was held at Christchurch, Ilkley, on Wednesday 17 October 2007. The Baroness Lockwood, President of ICVS, chaired the meeting which was well attended by representatives from member groups, Parish Councillors and several ICVS volunteers.John Jewitt, Chair of ICVS, reflected on the success of the organisation during the year.

Highlights of the year:

• Membership had increased to 167
• Annual Community Showcase aimed at promoting voluntary and community groups within the district
• Funding advice offered by volunteer Lynne Weeks
• Good Companions scheme continuing to offer support to the elderly and isolated in
the community

The annual accounts were presented by ICVS Treasurer, Brian Mann who highlighted the need for future funding to be secured to allow ICVS to maintain its vital services to the community.

The meeting confirmed the election of the following officers for 2006/7:

Chair John Jewitt
Vice Chair Ian Laven
Treasurer Brian Mann (representing Ilkley Parish Council)
Secretary Judy Hutton

The following were elected as members of the Executive Committee:

Pam Brunger Ilkley Friends of Martin House
John Cockshott Friends of the Manor House
Marjorie Hickson Churches Together in Ilkley

There followed a lively and interesting talk from Lesley Sargison, Youth Community Development Worker for Ilkley, in which she highlighted her role in supporting young people in Ilkley and district. There had been a number of projects organised during the summer to encourage young people to get involved and consultation had taken place with pupils at Ilkley Grammar School. It was recognised that the Warehouse had needed some refurbishment and the Management Committee had recently installed a new kitchen. The outside needed a facelift, however. The young people attending the Warehouse are engaged in a number of activities, for example making an animated film and designing and making clothes for a fashion show. She gave thanks to local group Tools for Self Reliance which had kindly donated sewing machines for this. In concluding Lesley asked for help from the Town in supporting her work at the Warehouse. Councillor Kate Brown from Ilkley in Bloom stated that her Committee would continue to offer help with the garden and it was acknowledged that litter was a continual problem, not always the fault of the young people.

In conclusion Baroness Lockwood reinforced the need to secure future funding for ICVS. She was delighted to note the continuing links both with the Parish Council and the District Council. Voluntary and community work is being recognised more and more as a vital part of the fabric of our economy, and the Audit report published earlier this year had underlined the importance of the work of what is nationally regarded as the third sector.

What's Your Passion?

As part of Volunteers’ Week, 1-7 June and the Year of the Volunteer 2005 celebrations Ilkley & District CVS held a Volunteer Fair on Friday 3rd June at Riddings Hall, Ilkley.

ICVS wishes to thank all those who participated in the Volunteer Fair thus making it the success it proved to be. The event allowed the 25 participating organisations to showcase their work and look at recruiting new volunteers.

Mayor presenting an awardMany commented on how interesting and informative the displays were and said that it was "Interesting to see what goes on in Wharfedale". Volunteers' Week (1-7th June) is a celebration of volunteering and it was clear from the fair that a lot of people in the area are committed to working in the voluntary sector and keen to support the local community therefore.

The main aim of the event was to encourage and reward volunteering in the community. The fair enabled volunteers and community groups to come together, share ideas and recognise their achievements.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford presented certificates to 20 volunteers to thank them for their personal contribution to the voluntary sector. The recipients were: Gill Bowskill - Young Arthritis Families, Dawn Burton & Adriana Wardner- Ilkley & District U3A, Pam Clarke - Girl Guiding UK, Stanley Evans - Ilkley New Horizons Concert Orchestra, Tony Gilroy - Ilkley In Bloom, David Cartwright - Ilkley Design Statement, Angie Griffin - Contact the Elderly, Peggy Hall - Menston Good Neighbours Scheme, Gwenan Hock - Menston Cares, Bob Jones & Malcolm Fisher - Burley Community Council, Margaret Smith & Margaret Kitching - Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts, Dennis Langford (Deceased) - Victim Support (Bradford District), Mary McTigue & Eloise Roberts - Airedale & Wharfedale Autism Resource, Wendy Perry - Ilkley & District Good Neighbours Community Transport, Terry Pullan - Addingham Churches Together Day Centre, Brian Wright (Deceased) - Clarke Foley Centre.

After the awards, the fair was thrown open to the public and more than 50 people came to find out about what goes on in the local area and learn to about volunteering opprtunities. Many said they found the fair interesting and informative and thought it should be an annual event. One local organisation said that the fair provided "a good forum to communicate to the public and [for] strengthening community network, others said "it's worth all the hard work" and "you've done a great job".
